Some years ago, my husband bought a Glacier Bay Flapperless Toilet for one reason and one reason only . . . it was guaranteed to flush when you pushed the handle. He was tired of toilets that kinda-sorta flushed, and then wouldn't flush until the water refilled. Fast foward a couple of years later, and the valve started to fail . . .
At first I jiggled the handle. When that no longer ...Read Full Post »

During a recent visit to Yuma, AZ, I noticed very few yards have grass down there in the desert. People used their creativity to make their yards attractive. There were Japanese raked-sand gardens, which had to be remade daily due to passing dogs that would kick at the sand while burying their unmentionables. Dry creek beds are a common theme. Lots of cactus. But my single-most favorite landscaping item was this adorable miniature prospector with his donkey, sitting on some Fool's Gold.

I tried to do a good deed by volunteering at Sunrise Equine Rescue. This is a really great cause not too far from where I live. My task was simple . . . refill the water buckets in each stall. The fellow in charge there was no stranger to product testers, he had me sign an injury waiver and tell him who my doctor was in case anything bad happened. Then he showed me to the hoses . . .

Well, I wrote a long, meandering post about how it was apple season, and my various efforts to get rid of all the fruit flies. But as you can see, I am inadvertently product-testing webs.com instead. This photo has been uploaded almost a dozen times, I have rotated it every which way, and it continues to upload upside down. I guess that is webs.com's version of "optimizing" the photo these days. When I finally pressed ...Read Full Post »

Ever since I saw a movie as a child, where the starlet sat in a giant round sunken bubble bath, I have been in love with tubs. Clawfoot, jacuzzi, and my ordinary outdated bright blue tub with the slightly sloped back -- they are all wonderful to me. One year, for our anniversary, my husband booked us in one of the special themed hotels at a bargain rate. To my shock and horror, the room only had a shower. We went back to the front counter and learned that the hotel did not have a single batht...Read Full Post »

I am a little embarrassed to admit it, but I am a flea magnet. In a few years, instead of calling me an "old bag," people will probably call me an "old flea bag." One of my youngest memories was walking through a flea-infested apartment and having hundreds of tiny black specks spring at me as I went through a doorway. So I still today get a little hysterical when I see a flea. Even more hysterical if I fail to catch it and kill it. When our renters cleared out leaving behind the smell of cat ...Read Full Post »

I am married to man with a giant nose who absolutely loves the smell and sight of flowers. So the house is full of rare blooming orchids and other plants absolutely covered with a certain kind of mold that I am desperately allergic to. When the lilacs bloom, I will spend a week doused in the choking fragrance of a giant bouquet in the middle of the kitchen.
Back when we were courting, I would h...Read Full Post »

I call my husband Dr. Doolittle. Animals have a special connection with him. He feeds every kind of creature he possibly can. Including people. One time I saw him feed a tiny crab a piece of sushi as it walked by us on the beach. I couldn't believe it took it right out of his hand. But he loves to feed hummingbirds most of all.
